Do you have an ancestor who was a little wayward, or ran off from his or her family? The Police Gazette may be of use. Each week are listed the names of people who the police all over England would like to find.

K Division (London) - For causing the death of his wife - Charles Suckling, alias SMITH and SUTTON, aged 40, height 5' 6", complexion, hair and tuft on chin dark, eyes grey; dress, pilot jacket cord trousers, heavy laced boots, hard hitter cap. A native of Havering Essex.

Its News To Me Research May 2003
It has been a long time since I last made a posting - a three week holiday in Japan can seriously upset your schedule.
Anyway I finally got back to Colindale on the 16th May. Partly to do some of my own research but also for some request I had had.
One request was for some pictures and an article in the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, a new publication to me. I turned out to be a weekly publication, with coverage similar to The Era, but with illustrations al la London Illustrated News. Unfortunately the date of 1892 was known but not the month or day. So I had to search through the publication - 52 editions.
The search was not too bad as there was plenty of things to keep me interested (this is an occupational hazard). Sporting events, such as football (association and rugby), cricket, cycling and athletics were covered as was Hunting 'n Fishing. The Dramatic part of the title covered the theatre and musical events in London.
The search for the illustration took me within 5 weeks of the end of the year. I was getting rather worried that the illustration was not not there, or even worse I had missed the illustration. It came as a relief when I first found a short write up of the recital by M de Pachmann at St James' Hall. The following week I discovered the group of illustation of M. Pachmann during the recital.
But something else came out of the review of the journal which may well be of interest to someone else out there. These were phoitographs of football, rubgy and crickets teams of the time. If one of your ancestors was a member of one of the teams below in 1892 then I may be able to get you a photograph of him. In each edition there wer normally two pictures featuring two teams who were playing each other around the date of publication.

There was a great article about Arthur Conan Doyle's Silver Blaze. A Sherlock Holmes mystery concerning horse racing. The writer of the article took great trouble ponting out the erros ACD had made in the story. It was quite long. A student of horse racing, Sherlock Holmes or Arthur Conan Doyal would find the article of great interest.
